The Cedar Grove Panthers opened their season on a good note with a 31-20 win over Newark Central. Many different Panthers contributed in a big way as four different players scored touchdowns in the win. Quarterback Mike Lever completed 10 of 15 passes for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns. John Guaimano, Mike Guarino, and Dillon Jennings all hauled in first half touchdowns to open up a 23-14 halftime lead.
Peter Johnson ran for the fourth touchdown in the third quarter to seal the deal for the Panthers as Joe Tanti, Sam Cosmillo, and Sebastiano Locascio led the way on the offensive line. Mike Lever and Mike Guarino led the ground game with 50 and 41 rushing yards respectively while Bruce Parades had 39 yards on the ground.
Linebackers Gerard Dente and Patch McCarthy led the defense with 12 and 10 tackles each while Mike Molteni pitched in with 9 tackles. The Cedar Grove defense forced three Central turnovers. John Guaimano and JP Winkle had interceptions and Joe Tanti recovered a fumble.
The Panthers are back in action next Friday against Hanover Park High School for the home opener at 7pm!
