In front of a standing room only crowd and rival Verona on the other side, the Cedar Grove Panthers beat the Verona Hillbillies 28-17 on Friday night.

Sammy Ventola threw for three touchdowns, all to different receivers, as Cedar Grove defeated Verona, 28-7, in the latest showdown between the long-time rivals at the new Cedar Grove High School Athletic Complex.

Ventola, who completed his first 17 pass attempts, finished 21-of-24 through the air for a season-high 208. Max DeVito caught five passes for 75 yards and a TD, John Guaimano had seven catches for 51 yards and a TD, Lever hauled in 6 passes for 60 yards and a TD and Ryan Turi added four receptions for 24 yards in the victory.

Cedar Grove struck first as senior Jake Ferrera (12 carries for 64 yards) took a fourth-down handoff off left tackle and raced down the left sideline for a 25-yard TD run on the Panthers’ opening drive.

Cedar Grove put the game away with another fourth-down score when Ventola connected with Guaimano for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the 6 with 11:05 left in the fourth quarter.
